How many BJJers does it take to change a lightbulb? | BJJ in Manchester | 30 Day Trial

Huge effort from all the guys today at Factory BJJ. Not only did we have an amazing day of classes, but we bonded as a team over the re-attaching of a light fitting!

The light needed to be re-hung, as one of the adults kicked a stability/ yoga ball at it before the main class! The ball was on the mat as we were using it in the  Kids BJJ Class, which may I add we had no breakages in! :)

Factory BJJ Gathering 2011 | BJJ in Manchester | 30 Free Days

This Sunday is Factory BJJ’s Gathering 2011.

This is the first year we have done this, but it will definitely be a recurring event on the calender.

This will take place on Sunday December 18th from 12pm – 3pm (I’m not putting an end time on it, it will probably go later).

2011 has been a fantastic year for us all at the club, so why not celebrate it together, hanging out, eating and doing the one thing we love doing the most – training!

Also with so many people training at the club now and with so many classes, it’s literally impossible to get everyone in the same room at the same time to train, so let’s try and do it at least once a year eh?!

The plan for the gathering is as follows:

1. Open Mat training from 12pm, which will be punctuated with a number of workshops lead by four brown belts, Adam Adshead, Gary Furlong, James Nardone and Griff. Very similar to how the Combat Base training days work.

2. Food and drink will be laid on upstairs. Usual Christmas nibbles and stuff, plus Cat is baking!

3. We will also have some DVDs playing upstairs on the TV, probably Arte Suave etc.

4. I will be making a number of promotions.

5. I will be giving out this year’s Grappler’s Grappler and Most Improved awards.

6. There will be a tag-team grappling tournament with medals!

7. I’ll be making some exciting announcements about the club, as we look towards 2012.

8. We can all hang out and catch up, something we don’t usually get chance to do too much of as a team and club.

Tickets are £10 and you can pay on the day.

Fancy it? RSVP!

Factory BJJ Christmas Meal 2011 | 30 Day Trial | BJJ in Manchester

What an amazing day! The club Christmas meal was a huge success, with 38 of the hungriest BJJ athletes descending on the Red Hot Buffet in Manchester.

The usual suspects ate the most, guys like Leroy and Lloyd but a new contender entered the mix in the shape of Rhys and I heard Ben was also up there! Those boys can eat!! I think out of all the BJJ clubs in Manchester, we have to have some of the biggest eaters! ;)

I love seeing everyone off the mat, enjoying themselves and that’s something I plan to do more off next year.

Roll on next weekend for the Factory BJJ Gathering!! More info to follow. See you on the mats!

Motivation to train! | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days

Today I met the most inspirational person.

I was finishing off a private lesson about 12pm and the door opens. A man asks “Is the Factory BJJ, I’ve got a guy outside who is looking for you?”.

So I say yeah, send him in. The man tells me that the chap in question is totally blind and had been trying to find us without much look.

It turns out this 17-year-old, who was blind, had taken two buses, walked around for a while trying to find us, then had got a lift off two helpful passers by – just to enquire about training!

The funny thing is, we’re not open all day and 15 mins later and I would have been back at home!

Anyway, so we sit down and have a chat and he tells me that he wants to do BJJ, as he loves the fact that so much is based on touch, sensitivity and feel.

Now I speak to a lot of people who end up joining my club, but this guy just had so much passion about joining and was so driven to make this work – it was truly inspiring.

So he’s going to do some private sessions first, then jump in the main classes and go from there!

It just goes to show if you want something badly enough, anything is possible.

This also serves as a reminder to those who might not always have the motivation or can’t be bothered to go to training. Maybe you had a tough day at work, it’s too cold, you feel tired etc etc….

If you ever get that feeling, maybe have a quick think about this guy and what lengths he will have to go to just to get to training and back each class. That’s without the training itself!

BJJ Basics seminar at Factory BJJ| BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days

Great BJJ Basics seminar today at Factory BJJ in Manchester!

We looked at building a simple, yet well rounded game plan for white belts to use whilst rolling!

We covered strategy, conceptual ideas for each position and specific techniques which you can use for each area.

Building on a solid guard game, we added in some sweeps and submissions. This was followed by a couple of high percentage guard passes and some attacking options from the top and escapes from underneath.

These seminars run every few months and are ideal for those who are new to BJJ and act as a nice refresher or those who have had breaks from training.

Thanks again guys, especially to Paulo and Melissa for the Brazilian flag! Obrigado meus amigos!! :)

Next Generation / Factory BJJ no gi session | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days

Next Gen / Factory BJJ

What a great night at Factory BJJ and for BJJ in Manchester. Awesome judo session with Mel Vosoughi followed by another top notch No Gi session with Gary Furlong on back takes!

Thanks to both for the coaching, plus everyone who came down, the mats were crammed!!! :)

Here is a picture of a few of us after class. Thanks to Next Gen‘s Marc Morrell and Matt Olson for making the trip over from Liverpool! I had great rolls with both, as well as with a number of others.

Looking forward to more of the Next Gen guys coming over to roll and train in the future and vice versa with us going up there! :)

Power in numbers and strength in depth! Always great to cross train with people from other gyms, especially a gym as well respected as Next Gen! :) It’s a good thing the two gyms have got going on and long may it continue!

The women of Factory BJJ doing us proud | Women’s BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days

What a weekend for women’s BJJ at Factory BJJ / Combat Base Stockport!

Both Cat Barkley and Liz Crowley made us all extremely proud with their achievements!

First up Cat Barkley became Factory BJJ’s first ever female BJJ Blue Belt, when she was promoted at the Combat Base training day in Bolton by Darren and Helen Currie.

Cat was Factory BJJ’s first ever women and since then has paved the way for more women to join the club.

Almost at the same time about 30 miles away, Liz Crowley was competing at Ground Control in Manchester.

Liz had two matches, she won her first match with a Rear Naked Choke and lost the second in the final to take the silver medal! :)

“I’m immensely proud of both Cat and Lizzy!” Adam Adshead said. “Women’s BJJ in Manchester and in the UK is still massively under represented,  so it’s amazing to see Factory BJJ’s women progressing and developing each and every time they get on the mat!”

Adam Adshead signs sponsorship deal with Scramble! | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days

It is with great pleasure that Factory BJJ can announce that head coach Adam Adshead has signed a sponsorship deal with Scramble!

Adam and Scramble‘s Matt Benyon go way back. All the way back to when Adam was blogging about BJJ in Manchester as a white belt at ConceptualBJJ.com, and Matt was living in Japan blogging about BJJ as Martial Farts and The Grappling Dummy!

Since then Matt and his business partner Ben Tong have taken the world by storm with their clothing and lifestyle brand Scramble! They make some of the most stylish and cool looking t-shirts, shorts, rashguards and gis in the BJJ community!

Adam has since gone full-time as a BJJ coach and seen his school grow and develop into one of the best BJJ clubs in the North.

So it’s nice for both of them to come together to help one another to the next level.

“It’s a real honour and privilege to be officially sponsored by Scramble,” Adam said.

“I’ve known Matt for years and it’s been great to see both our passions and projects grow into successful ventures! Who would have thought that all those years ago we’d both be in the position we’re both in now!”

He added: “I absolutely love Scramble‘s ethos – it matches mine and Factory BJJ‘s perfectly, so this is why this deal will work so well!”

Visit Scramble‘s website at ScrambleStuff.com and check out their range!

BJJ Fighter of the week: Robson Moura | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days

As you might have seen we’ve been posting a lot about Robson Moura recently and why not?!

Not only did Factory BJJ host him recently, but a few of us also went to his London No Gi seminar and it was fantastic!

With that being said and to wrap up our series of Robson Moura blogs, this week sees the man himself as our BJJ Fighter of the week.

What can I say that hasn’t already been written about Robson. He’s won the Mundials 7 times, plus countless other medals and achivements and often found in those greatest of all times lists you see in magazines and online.

His style is amazing, he’s so smooth and his agility and speed to flow from one move to another is superb.

I had the honour to roll with him during his visit and it was a very enjoyable experience! :)

I cannot wait to cheer on Robson at this year’s ADCC tournament, which many of the BJJ Manchester contingent will be at in full force! :)

Check out this video below, which shows Robson teaching in London on his recent seminar tour.

I’m extremely pleased to announce that on Tuesday (August 9th), Leroy Holcroft was promoted to Purple belt and BJJ in Manchester got that little bit better ;)

Our coaches Darren and Helen Currie had asked me to give it to him on their behalf and it couldn’t have been better!

Leroy was promoted just after the novice class but before the advanced class, so the mats were crammed full with over 30 people in attendance to cheer him on :)

The best thing was the shock on his face! Anyone who knows Leroy and his game, will know this is waaaaaay overdue.

Leroy is a fine example of everything a good BJJ practitioner should be. He’s super humble, works extremely hard and is always looking to better himself and others on the mat.

He’s one of my favourite people to train with and that makes the promotion even sweeter for me!

Congratulations to Leroy from everyone at Factory BJJ, we’re proud to have you on board as a coach, friend and athlete.

Robson Moura no gi seminar review| BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days

As you’ll have read below Factory BJJ hosted a true legend in the sport a few weeks back in the form of Robson Moura.

Not content with our amazing seminar, plus the private I did with him (where I was the first person to roll with him in the UK :) ), we decided to head to the London No Gi seminar too.

In attendance was me, Ryan Broomhall and Karl Whittaker who made the journey down south to BJJ School HQ in Battersea.

Covering a number tecniques including no gi ideas on passing, top control submissions and a nifty option on switching the triangle to a nice shoulder lock, the time flew by and before we knew it were were back on the M6 heading back home to Manchester!

Another fantastic seminar and thanks to Champ Champ and Robson for making it happen! Looking forward to the next one and of course, drilling and working this new material into the mix! :)

Factory BJJ NEW Timetable | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days

Factory BJJ / Combat Base Stockport – NEW Timetable

If you hadn’t already heard, 12 Gauge MMA are moving out of the gym soon and that means more free time for classes at the gym!

Over the past 3-4 months it’s got to the point where both clubs have grown to a size where we both need extra classes on throughout the week, so Matt Thorpe and the gang will be shortly moving to Meadow Mill in Stockport.

We wish them all the best, but this isn’t the end of our connection to 12 Gauge MMA! There will still be cross training between the two clubs and you’ll be sure to see us attending each others seminars and open mats when we get chance.

So the new timetable, as of September 5th will be:

Monday 12-2pm – Gi Drilling Session (1)
Monday 7-8.30pm – No Gi Submission Wrestling  (2)
Monday 8.30-10pm – GI Competition Class (Invite Only) (3)

Tuesday 6.15 – 7pm – Intro Class
Tuesday 7pm – 8.30pm – Novice Class (4)
Tuesday 8.30pm – 10pm – Advanced Class (5)

Wednesday 7.30pm – 8.15pm – BJJ Conditioning (6)
Wednesday - 8.30pm – 10pm – Novice Class (7)

Thursday 12-2pm Gi Drilling Session (8)
Thursday 6 – 7.15pm – Judo For BJJ (9)
Thursday 7.15pm – 8pm – Intro Class
Thursday 8 – 9.30 – No Gi Submission Wrestling (10)

Friday – 10-12pm Gi Drilling Session (11)

Saturday 11.30 – 1pm – BJJ Fundamentals Class (12)
Saturday 1-2.30pm – Open Mat (13)

Sunday 1 – 2.30pm Open Mat (14)
Sunday 2.30 – 3.30pm Yoga for BJJ (15)

Looks good right? If you’re looking for BJJ in Manchester then I’m sure there are classes you can make to fit your schedule! :)

Please note that the extra novice and no gi classes during the week will be the same topic. The extra classes are to thin out the busy classes and allow you to either get twice the amount of time on one topic or maintain your regular classes if you happen to miss one that week.

Robson Moura shirt swap | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days | Martial Arts in Manchester

So we had the Robson Moura seminar in Manchester yesterday and it was amazing!

What was also amazing was the rash guard Robson had on and had been wearing!

I told Robson how much I liked it and he offered to give it to me! What a nice thing to do!

But I could’t let him do that and leave empty handed, so I told him that I would give him something back in return.

Seeing as we’re both Manchester United fans and after our visit to Old Trafford last night, I had to buy him a shirt! :)

So we agreed that he’d give me the rashguard, one he’d had for while and was the last of its kind around he said, and I’d send him a shirt to America.

But I couldn’t wait, so I bought one first thing this morning and as you’ll see from the picture below, I got his name on the back and the number 7 (the number of golds he’s won at the worlds).

I love my new rash guard, it fits me perfectly and I particularly like all the little bobbles and signs of ware and tear! I was going to frame it but I’m going to wear it and enjoy it!

Robson said he loved the Manchester United shirt too and he said he can’t wait to wear it when he goes back to Brazil to train for ADCC 2011.

Thanks again Robson, this made your visit even better! Next time you’re over, I’ll take you to a match! :)

Robson Moura Seminar 2011 | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days | Martial Arts in Manchester

It’s not everyday that a BJJ club in Manchester hosts a living legend in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but yesterday Robson Moura visited Factory BJJ and WOW! What a seminar!

With 7 gold medals in the BJJ world championships, no one can argue with his competition record, but Robson is more than that and his coaching skills are simply world class too.

Covering a range of options from the guard and from side control, Robson‘s eye for detail and his approachable coaching style, made for an amazing session.

I don’t think it’s quite sunk in yet and my head is still fuzzy from the awesomeness, so forgive me for not going into too much detail – but what I can do is tell you that from white belt to the black belts we had on the mat, everyone was majorly impressed!

When Robson showed a move, people actually gasped! Seriously! I’ve trained a long time now and been to lots of seminars and I was truly blown away by not only the technical side of his coaching but also by his Q+A at the end – plenty to be thinking about!

Huge thanks to Robson, to Ed and Leo from Champ Camp, to everyone who came and extra thanks to Lloyd, Leroy and James for all the help with the marquee! :)

I look forward to training with Robson again! This isn’t the last time for sure!

Deadhang Challenge UPDATE #2 | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days | Martial Arts in Manchester

The Deadhang Challenge is still on at Factory BJJ and the Sweat Shed!

It’s simple enough. You take a grip of the olympic rings and hang till you drop to the floor!

Since the last update coach Leroy Holcroft has stormed the leaderboard with an amazing 3 mins 36 seconds, but both Adam Adshead (3.09) and Mat Leigh (3.15), are hot on his heals! ;)

Everyone’s times have improved and are improving week and week, so let’s keep pushing forward with this to see where we get to! :)

It’s all a bit of fun, but good grip strength is very important when you’re training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the guys who are up at the higher end of the leaderboard all work their grip strength off the mat – and it shows with the times!

Below is a little video someone sent me of a Deadhang Challenge which sees an Olympic gymnast vs an Orangutan! Check it out!

Rickson Gracie video interview (July 2011) | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days | Martial Arts in Manchester

Rickson Gracie is one of the all time greats in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. FACT! So when he talks, we all listen.

Below is a very rare video interview he recently did in which he talks about the evolution of the sport side of BJJ and also about his philosophy of BJJ.

Well worth a watch! Check it out!

BJJ Fighter of the week: JT Torres | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days | Martial Arts in Manchester

This week’s BJJ Fighter of the week is JT Torres.

JT fights out of Team Lloyd Irvin and is one of the most active and hungriest competitors around!

Getting his black belt at the age of  just 19, JT has been on the scene for what seems like years!

He has a long list of high profile wins and medals at all the major tournaments, most recently taking bronze at the 2011 BJJ world championships.

JT has an amazing back take game, but is very well rounded and is big on the mental game too, something which has seen him go far!

I’m seriously looking forward to seeing JT Torres at this year’s ADCC tournament, which many of the BJJ Manchester contingent will be at in full force! :)

Check out the video below where he talks about his approach to the mental game and below that for a video of him against UFC fighter and BJJ black belt Dustin Hazelett.

If you didn’t know, the Robson Moura seminar sold out a few weeks back.

Having said that the club bought the very last ticket and raffled it off.

This gave people a chance to come to the seminar who might not have been able to afford it or if they missed the boat on getting a ticket.

I explain it more on the video, so take a look and see who won it!

Tomorrow (Saturday) we’ve got the Fundamental drilling class at Factory BJJ.

This is one of my favourite sessions of the week! As previously reported Factory‘s James Nardone is teaching this class on a regular basis and already it’s proving a very useful class for everyone!

Tomorrow James is looking at more scissor sweep options, including some stuff from the recent Combat Base seminar Darren and Helen Currie taught.

Miss it, miss out as always people! 11.30am sharp!

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Manchester on a Saturday just got even better!

I think training no gi really helps compliment your gi training, so if you’re not training much no gi at the moment get down!

Thursday is always a busy lesson, check out the video below. This was from the warm-up last week and I’m not exaggerating when I say there were a lot of people missing that night too!

Factory BJJ – Summer Slam! | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days | Martial Arts in Manchester

Factory BJJ are hosting a charity Summer Slam event on July 30th in aid of Christies.

We’ll be doing a 25 person Submission-only Royal Rumble match at 1pm.

The cost to enter is £5, with all proceeds going to the charity. It’s gi, but you have to come in fancy dress, or at least jazz up your gi! :)

The rules are simple, everyone for themselves and the last person left wins the Combat Base belt and bragging rights!

There are already a lot of tactics and ganging up being talked about by the white belts to take out the big hitters like me and current title holder James Nardone early on, so anything could happen and anyone could win! :)

It’s all a bit of fun and will be filmed and put online.

We’ve already had people from other BJJ clubs in Manchester asking if they can enter, but it’s not a real competition or anything and I’m not sure how insurance would cover such a thing, so we’re making it a Factory BJJ / Combat Base only event this time around.

Get in touch if you want to enter and you train at Factory BJJ and check out the promo video below!

Walid Ismail vs Royce Gracie | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days | Martial Arts in Manchester

In the novice and advanced BJJ classes at Factory BJJ, we’re currently looking at working at attacking from turtle and it’s going great!

Tonight we’re going to be working some more attacks and I’ve got some nice drills to start bedding in the material.

Having said that I promised that I would post the video of Walid Ismail‘s clock choke on Royce Gracie.

The clock choke is great submission and this video is probably the most famous application of it in sport BJJ. If there are any others worth mentioning, please leave a comment below!

This video is not just an example of a certain submission in action, but a part of BJJ history!

BJJ Fighter of the week: Fernando ‘Terere’ Augusto | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days | Martial Arts in Manchester

This week’s BJJ fighter of the week is none other than Fernando ‘Terere’ Augusto.

I love to watch Terere, he is just inspirational. It’s almost like he never stops moving! His agility, quick decisions and his ability to be going one way, then go the other is just amazing to see.

Terere has inspired many in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and you can see his style in a lot of other practitioners (not just his notable former students) including: Andre Galvao, Cobrinha, Sergio Moraes, Bruno Frazzato and last week’s fighter of the week Bruno Malfacine.

I’m looking forward to seeing Terere back competing again soon after some problems off the mat. How awesome would it be to see him at ADCC 2011?!

Factory BJJ‘s James Nardone is also a huge fan of Terere and we were both were lucky enough to attend a seminar with him last year – plus James had a private with him too!

Check out this highlight video below, which shows him competing against some of the best in the world, including Roger Gracie.

Roger Gracie teaches the cross-choke | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days | Martial Arts in Manchester

Roger Gracie has probably got the greatest cross-choke from mount in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

I’m a big fan of Roger, his game is so simple but so effective! I’m really looking forward to seeing him compete against the likes of Rodolfo Viera, Xande Ribeiro and Robert Drysdale at this year’s ADCC! :)

Watch the video below to see him teach the submission with some really nice extra details and tweaks.

The video does come with subtitles, so be sure to click the ‘CC’ button on the clip. Although you’ll only be able to access them if you watch the clip on Youtube, so just double click the video.

Enjoy!

Genki Sudo – Competition Footage | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days | Martial Arts in Manchester

If you’ve never seen or heard of Genki Sudo, then you’re in for a treat!

Below is a video of him in fighting in a No Gi grappling competition from a good few years back and he absolutely kills it!

I’ve not watched this for years, but I was reminded of it last week when I pulled off a flying triangle to pass Ben‘s guard.

The funniest thing was that Ben said “I don’t understand what just happened, why am I in a triangle?!”.

It was so funny it just killed the roll dead right there as Ben was confused and I couldn’t stop laughing at his disbelief! :)

Anyway, I thought I’d share it on here as I told some of the younger guys at the club about Genki Sudo and sadly they’d never heard of him! :(

Sudo is a legend and retired way too early. I’ll always remember trying to emulate his style when I started training and I know a lot of the guys who were training submission wrestling or BJJ in Manchester at the time tried to do the same! Plus we all wanted his amazing tattoos too! :)

BJJ fighter of the week: Bruno Malfacine | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days | Martial Arts in Manchester

A while ago I started a BJJ Fighter of the week series at the gym. Each week I’d pick someone and write their name, main attributes and any matches people should check out on my whiteboard.

Anyway, since my whiteboard now resembles something from the film ‘A beautiful mind’, I’ve not had chance to keep up with it, so I’m starting it on here.

This week’s fighter is Bruno Malfacine.

Bruno fights for Alliance and has a very dynamic style and his matches are always great to watch. He fights in the Rooster division and most recently won the IBJJF 2011 world championships.

Check out the video below of one of his fights. You’ll notice his speed and his ability to play from any position – he’s a very versatile fighter and a fine example of beautiful Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

I actually met Bruno at the IBJJF European Championships earlier this year. I fought on the UK Brown and Black Belt team and we were matched against Brazil, after beating Spain.

Anyway, I was stood talking to Micheal Langhi, who I was lucky enough to train with last year, and he introduced me to him. The only thing was that Micheal thought it was funny to play a trick on me and told Bruno in Portuguese that I told him that if I were ever to roll with him I’d destroy him! :)

Both Bruno and Micheal are super nice guys and I’m happy to present Factory BJJ’s Fighter of the week with the following clip:

Also check out Budovideos interview and rolling footage of Bruno Malfacine – well worth a watch!

UFC 132: Cruz vs Faber | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days | Martial Arts in Manchester

UFC 132: Cruz vs Faber, did you stay up late to watch it?

Plenty of action and I won’t spoil any of the results if you haven’t seen it yet, but as always it was nice to see Brazilian Jiu Jitsu playing a role in some of the fights.

I enjoyed the main event as I am always keen to see any of Team Lloyd Irvin‘s guys fight. Cruz has been training his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with them, so you know he’s in good hands and has been improving that side of his game!

Above all else, UFC 132 was miles better than the David Haye vs Wladimir Klitschko fight, I don’t think anyone can disagree with that!

If you’ve ever wondered what one of Mat Leigh‘s BJJ Conditioning sessions are like, then check out the video below.

Mat Leigh is the best personal trainer in Stockport (in my opinion) and as he also trains Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, so he knows the types of drills, circuits and workouts that really help us out on the mat.

If you’ve never tried one of these sessions, then what are you waiting for?! They’re every Wednesday at 7.30pm and are open to anyone who trains BJJ in Manchester, not just those from Factory BJJ.

If you’ve never watched those early UFC events on grainy VHS tapes, then you might not know the importance that Royce had on our sport!

I remember a friend of mine lent me the tapes back in 2003 and I was blown away! I guarantee that all of the owners of the MMA and BJJ clubs in Manchester, Stockport and beyond, will have had a similar experience.

Check out the video below and see what I’m talking about.

I’m particularly excited to see Marcelo Garcia, Cobrinha, Jeff Glover, Xande Ribiero, Robson Moura, Bruno Frazatto, Andre Galvao, Jacare, The Mendes Brothers…. actually there are too many names to mention!!

Over the coming weeks I’m going to be asking the guys at Factory BJJ who they think will win each category, so watch this space!

It’s a great prank the guys at Gracie HQ in Torrance, Los Angeles did on the students at their Academy, with a grappling dummy called Bubba Gracie.

I won’t spoil it for you, you just have to watch it!

During Factory BJJ’s trip to LA in 2009 we actually had the chance to visit the Gracie Academy in Torrance. We didn’t train but we had a look around and spent some time in the museum, which was fascinating!

There are lots of old photos from the early days of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and some amazing bits of memorabilia – well worth the trip!

Anyway, check out the video and I’ll see you on the mat soon at Factory BJJ!

James Nardone | BJJ in Manchester | Martial Arts in Manchester

I’m really happy to announce that Factory BJJ‘s James Nardone will be taking over the reigns of the Saturday BJJ Fundamentals Class on a permanent basis!

I’m really looking forward to his input in the class and I’m sure it will go from strength to strength!

For those who don’t know him, James is one of the best BJJ athletes in Manchester and  his competition record speaks for itself!

As a coach he is equally as good, with a superior insight and a detailed coaching approach, which will see those of all levels picking up techniques from their first go.

James has trained at Factory BJJ since its inception and while he has always been on hand to cover classes for the club, it’s great for him to finally teach a regular class of his own.

Miss these sessions at your peril people! James is a great coach and you’ll struggle not to improve if you regularly attend!

Dead Hang Challenge – UPDATE | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days | Martial Arts in Manchester

As previously reported, Factory BJJ‘s head coach Adam Adshead took on the Dead Hang Challenge.

Well, a few more of the guys from the gym have stepped up to give it a go.

Take a look at the picture above and you’ll see the leadboard in the Sweat Shed.

Lloyd Cooper got 1 minute 29 and Factory BJJ coach James Nardone got 1 minute 13. Great effort for a first attempt guys! I’m sure they’ll both be back to challange Adam for the top spot on the leaderboard soon!

It’s all a bit of fun, but good grip strength is very important when you’re training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Adam Adshead’s Kimura Seminar | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days | Martial Arts in Manchester

Thanks to everyone who came to the Kimura Seminar today, it was a great turnout and it’s always nice to see our friends from other BJJ clubs in Manchester.

I only decided to run this seminar late this week, so I was really pleased that so many showed up, especially because it’s Fathers Day!

Below is an overview of what I did. This is the same as the handout I gave out to those who attended.

Keep an eye out for more BJJ seminars in the near future. The price for non-members was £15 and for full-members it was FREE! So definitely consider joining if you’re still paying per session.

Dead Hang Challenge at the Sweat Shed | BJJ in Manchester | 30 FREE Days | Martial Arts in Manchester

Whether it’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Manchester, wrestling alligators or competitive eating, we’re always up for a bit of friendly competition at Factory BJJ.

So when Mat Leigh from the Sweat shed – our conditioning coach and the best personal trainer in Stockport – told us about the Dead Hang Challenge, we had to give it a go!

Take a look at the picture above and you’ll get an idea of what I’m on about. It’s simple enough; who can hang from his Olympic rings for the longest?

My first attempt was 1 min 48 secs. My second after a long day of training was 2 mins 22 secs. I’m currently top of the leader-board but I’m sure it’ll keep changing as we all keep giving it a go!

Fancy trying it out?
